Amerikansk imperial stout er sort og har typisk et højt alkoholindhold. Den beskrives generelt som meget robust. Den ekstremt rige maltsmag og -aroma afbalanceres af markant humling og frugtige estere. Bitterheden bør være moderat høj til meget høj og afbalanceret af et fuldt, sødt maltpræg. Snerpethed og bitterhed fra mørkristet malt kan opfattes moderat, men bør ikke overdøve helheden. Humlearomaen er som regel moderat høj til overvældende blomsteragtig, citrusagtig eller urteagtig. Diacetyl (smørkaramel) bør ikke forekomme.
